Citigroup is one of the largest banks in the world and one of the oldest in the U.S., having been founded in 1812. Based in New York City, the bank was originally known as City Bank of New York before changing its name to National City Bank of New York in 1865. In 1998, the bank merged with Travelers Group, a major insurance company, and became Citigroup. In 2008, during the global financial crisis, the company nearly failed and was rescued by the U.S. government.[1]
Today, the bank does business in more than 160 countries, offering a full menu of products and services to consumers, business, governments and institutions. At year-end 2020, it operated more than 2,000 branches, mostly in the U.S., Mexico and Asia.[2] The company's ticker symbol is C, and its market cap is about US$151 billion as of April 2021.[3]
