Disney Finds Box Office Success but its Stock Struggles
Disney Analysis
The media giant has been on a rocky path over the last couple of years, as its studios struggled creatively, its linear networks underperformed due to soft advertising and cord cutting, its streaming business underperformed and on top of that, it faced proxy fights.
However, the company has managed to fend off hostile investors, it beefed up its dividend payout, it is cutting costs and rationalizing content. The streaming services are on the verge of turning profitable, subscribers are increasing again and the firm is pushing hard on live digital sports.
In the latest sign that the turnaround efforts are having an impact, Disney ended its box office drought with the animated movie Inside Out 2, which grossed more than $1 trillion worldwide according to Box Office Mojo [1]. It is the first movie to surpass this threshold since last summer's mega hit Barbie form Warner Bros (WBD.us).
These developments have helped the stock to a relief rally from the 2021-2023 plunge that culminated in October's multiyear lows and the promising signs offer reasons for optimism. But after a strong start to the year, the rebound has faltered with a nearly 20% drop in Q2, creating scope for new 2024 lows (88.79) that would bring the aforementioned lows in the spotlight. This decline highlights the challenges that still lie ahead, amidst struggling linear assets, increasing streaming competition and some concerns over its parks outlook.
