Fed Policy Faces Fresh Tests from Inflation and Earnings
The coming days could prove particularly important for US monetary policy as investors digest a combination of major technology earnings, economic releases and developments in energy markets. Although the Federal Reserve is expected to keep borrowing costs unchanged this week, another rate increase in December remains a realistic prospect. Inflation continues to present a challenge, with expensive oil adding to price pressures at a time when parts of the economy are already showing signs of strain. Corporate results will also attract considerable attention, particularly from Microsoft, Alphabet and Amazon, as investors assess whether the enormous sums being committed to artificial intelligence can deliver sustainable returns.
Recent volatility in technology shares suggests that confidence in the sector is becoming more selective. A further deterioration in investor sentiment could also complicate the policy outlook, particularly if market volatility begins to weigh more heavily on business confidence and consumer spending. This leaves policymakers facing an increasingly complicated picture, with inflation risks pulling in one direction and signs of economic vulnerability in the other. The coming earnings announcements and economic indicators should provide valuable insight into how these competing pressures are developing. Ultimately, the strength of the economy and the resilience of financial markets may prove just as important as inflation in determining the Fed's next move.
Cross-Asset View
Financial markets are sending some interesting, and at times contrasting, signals as investors weigh geopolitical tensions, shifting interest rate expectations and the latest corporate earnings. From oil and gold to the US dollar and equities, the technical picture is beginning to reveal where momentum may be building and where caution is still warranted. Our cross asset analysis takes a closer look at what these developments could mean for the next move in markets.
Oil

Technical Analysis
UKOil maintains a firmly bullish technical outlook, trading near $115.90 after decisively breaking above the previous resistance area around $108.50–$109.00. This former resistance zone now represents an important support area, with the breakout reinforcing the broader upward trend. Price action continues to hold above both the short- and longer-term moving averages, which are rising and positively aligned. The RSI remains comfortably above 50, indicating underlying bullish momentum, although its proximity to overbought territory suggests the possibility of some near-term consolidation. Provided the former resistance area holds as support, the technical bias favours further gains towards $118.00 and potentially the psychologically significant $120.00 level.
USOil also displays a constructive technical picture, trading around $101.60 following a strong recovery from its early-October lows near $89.00. The rebound has established a sequence of higher lows, while price action remains above both moving averages, supporting the improving trend. The RSI has moved decisively above 50, suggesting underlying bullish momentum, although its recent moderation indicates some easing in buying pressure. Immediate resistance is located around $103.50, followed by the more significant $106.00 area, where previous advances encountered selling pressure. A sustained break above this resistance region would strengthen the bullish outlook, while the rising moving averages around $99.00–$100.00 provide an initial area of potential support.
Fundamental Perspective
Oil prices are finding renewed support from escalating tensions in the Middle East, with fresh concerns over Saudi Arabian supply adding to an already nervous market. Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis have claimed responsibility for a missile strike on the Ras Tanura refinery, although Saudi authorities have yet to confirm that the facility was hit. The uncertainty is enough to keep supply risks firmly on investors' radar, particularly given Saudi Arabia's importance to global crude exports. Adding to the positive tone, American Petroleum Institute figures showed US crude inventories falling by approximately 2.03 million barrels in the week ended 23 October, pointing to a tighter near-term inventory picture. Meanwhile, OPEC+ is expected to leave its December production targets unchanged, offering little prospect of additional supply through a policy adjustment. Taken together, these developments lend support to the bullish technical outlook for UKOil and USOil. However, geopolitical tensions remain a double-edged sword, with any meaningful progress towards a diplomatic resolution potentially removing some of the risk premium currently supporting prices.
USDOLLAR

Technical Analysis
USDOLLAR is beginning to regain bullish traction, trading around 12,787 following a recovery from its recent lows near 12,735. The improving technical picture is reinforced by the shorter-term exponential moving average crossing above its longer-term counterpart, suggesting that buying pressure is rebuilding after the recent pullback. Encouragingly, the RSI has also pushed back above the crucial 50 level, signalling a return of underlying bullish momentum. The longer the RSI maintains a position above this threshold, particularly if it continues climbing, the stronger the case for further dollar appreciation. Immediate resistance lies around 12,800, followed by the recent highs near 12,820–12,835. A sustained move above these levels would strengthen the bullish outlook, while the moving averages around 12,770–12,775 provide an initial area of potential support.
Fundamental Perspective
The US dollar is finding renewed support as investors reassess the Federal Reserve's interest rate outlook ahead of today's policy announcement. While markets overwhelmingly expect rates to remain unchanged, attention is shifting towards December, when another increase remains a distinct possibility. Persistent inflation concerns, exacerbated by elevated energy prices, are keeping pressure on policymakers, while US Treasury yields near 5% continue to underpin the greenback's appeal. FXCM's USDOLLAR basket has already climbed to a two-week high, reflecting the more supportive backdrop. Much now depends on the Fed's message, particularly whether Chair Kevin Warsh signals that further tightening remains necessary. A hawkish tone could give the dollar's emerging technical recovery another push, while a softer stance may take some of the momentum out of the rally.
Gold

Technical Analysis
Gold remains firmly entrenched in a downtrend, with a succession of lower peaks and lower troughs reinforcing the prevailing bearish structure. Trading around $4,032, XAUUSD has broken below the important $4,100 support level, which has now become an immediate resistance area. Price action continues to trade beneath both the short- and longer-term exponential moving averages, with their bearish alignment suggesting that sellers retain control. The RSI also remains below the critical 50 threshold, indicating that underlying momentum continues to favour the downside, despite a modest recovery from oversold territory. As long as the RSI remains below 50 and prices struggle to reclaim $4,100, the technical outlook favours further weakness towards the psychological $4,000 level, followed by the recent lows around $3,970–$3,980. A sustained recovery above $4,100 would be needed to begin challenging the current bearish structure.
Fundamental Perspective
Gold remains under pressure as a firmer US dollar and elevated Treasury yields continue to undermine its appeal. Renewed tensions in the Middle East have added another layer of uncertainty, with rising oil prices threatening to keep inflation stubbornly high and complicate the Federal Reserve's interest rate outlook. While policymakers are widely expected to leave rates unchanged at today's meeting, investors are increasingly looking towards December, when another increase remains a strong possibility. For gold, this presents a difficult backdrop, as higher interest rates make non-yielding assets less attractive, particularly when the dollar is strengthening. Attention now turns to the Fed's policy announcement and tomorrow's US PCE inflation figures, which could provide important clues about the direction of monetary policy. For now, the fundamental picture continues to favour the bears, reinforcing gold's weakening technical structure, although a softer Fed message or renewed safe-haven buying could offer some respite.
Index in Focus: SPX500

Technical Analysis
SPX500 is showing encouraging signs of a recovery, trading around 7,731 after breaking above the descending trendline that had constrained price action since its early-October highs. The breakout suggests that selling pressure is easing and that bullish momentum may be returning. Supporting this improvement, the RSI has moved back above the important 50 threshold, indicating a shift towards positive underlying momentum. Crucially, the longer the RSI remains above 50, particularly if it continues to rise, the stronger the case for further gains. Meanwhile, the shorter-term exponential moving average is approaching a bullish crossover above its longer-term counterpart. Such a crossover, followed by upward angling and increasing separation between the averages, would provide stronger confirmation of a developing bullish trend. Immediate resistance lies around 7,750, followed by 7,790–7,820, while the established 7,615 support level remains an important downside reference. For now, the technical picture is improving, although sustained momentum and confirmation from the moving averages are needed to strengthen the bullish outlook.
Fundamental Perspective
US equities are showing signs of renewed confidence as enthusiasm for artificial intelligence and a largely encouraging earnings season help lift sentiment. The SPX500 gained 0.6% yesterday, led by technology and semiconductor shares. So far, around 83% of companies that have reported third-quarter results have beaten earnings expectations. However, the recovery remains somewhat narrow, with much of the buying concentrated in a handful of influential technology stocks. Attention now turns to Microsoft and Alphabet, whose results later today will provide another important test of whether substantial AI investment is delivering the returns investors expect. The Federal Reserve also takes centre stage, with policymakers widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged, although the possibility of another increase in December remains firmly in focus. For now, improving earnings sentiment offers some encouragement for SPX500's emerging technical recovery, but a more hawkish Fed message or disappointing technology results could quickly test the strength of the rebound.
