The European Commission has said that Google's advertising technology practices breaches EU antitrust laws. It has recommended that the company break up adtech, its ad business.
In a statement today, the regulator said, "Google is active on both sides of the market with its publisher ad server and with its ad buying tools and holds a dominant position on both ends. Furthermore, it operates the largest ad exchange. This leads to a situation of inherent conflicts of interest for Google."
According to the initial investigation conducted by the European Commission, it has been determined that Google has engaged in "anti-competitive behaviour" in the adtech market since 2014.
Google has been granted the chance to thoroughly review the contents of the Commission's inquiry file, provide a written response, and request an oral hearing.
