Salesforce post-earnings outlook: SaaSpocalypse fears are getting harder to justify

Salesforce at the heart of Agentic AI

The proliferation of AI has entered a more aggressive phase through the rise of agents and inference, which requires much more compute and is shifting hardware needs toward CPUs and the likes of Intel. Gartner projects that AI agent software spending will reach $206.5 billion this year, up 139%, and keep growing into 2027. [1]

Salesforce is at the core of enterprise Agentic AI and Agentforce is the spearhead of its modern strategy, which aims to revolutionise CRM by transitioning it from assistive to autonomous. Expanding its deep ties with frontier labs, Salesforce recently launched "Claudeforce" in partnership with Anthropic. This integration goes both ways: it embeds Claude as the default reasoning engine across Agentforce and Slack, while allowing corporations to access live customer data and execute workflows directly within the Claude app.

Operational momentum underscores this adoption. The CRM leader reported that enterprise users processed 3.2 billion Agentic Work Units across Agentforce and Slack in the July quarter alone, nearly doubling sequentially and bringing the cumulative total to 7 billion [2]. Slackbot, the conversational front end of the Agentforce ecosystem, has reached one million users within five months of launch as corporations rapidly adopt agentic workflows. [3]

Agentic AI drives financial growth

On Wednesday, Salesforce reported strong results and guidance driven primarily by AI adoption, with CEO Marc Benioff noting that AI is creating "value across every layer of our platform" and "incredible demand" for relevant products [3]. The numbers support these claims, as Agentforce Annualised Recurring Revenue exceeded $1.5 billion. While still a relatively small percentage of total sales, its growth rate in excess of 240% makes it a clear accelerant.

Boosted by rising sales across its Agentic AI ecosystem, management upgraded its outlook for the full fiscal year. It now expects an 11%-12% increase in revenues and a substantial bump in diluted earnings per share. [2]

AI adoption alleviates SaaSpocalypse concerns

The key fear surrounding software providers from the rise of AI is that it will hurt their pay-per-seat business model by eliminating jobs. The secondary risk is displacement, as advanced AI labs could render traditional SaaS interfaces obsolete. However, Wednesday's report and guidance helped alleviate these "SaaSpocalypse" worries.

Salesforce demonstrated clear progress in the adoption of its own AI tools and an ability to monetise them. Agentforce is seeing rapid proliferation and its consumption-based pricing breaks away from the legacy billing model. Meanwhile, the expanded Anthropic partnership shows that Salesforce remains a critical integration layer for building agentic workflows rather than a bypassed utility.

CEO Marc Benioff was succinct during the earnings call, saying it is time for the SaaSpocalypse "nonsense" to stop. He noted defiantly that seat counts are actually growing and customer attrition is near record lows. Moreover, he argued that AI powerhouses like Anthropic are partnering with Salesforce because frontier models rely on enterprise CRM data rather than replacing it.

AI and macro risks linger

Despite the substantial progress of Salesforce and its central role in Agentic AI, disruption risks have not vanished. Although Agentforce relies on consumption pricing, it does not entirely eliminate the pay-per-seat model. To use agents effectively, companies still depend on the core CRM ecosystem, which remains tied to legacy billing structures that are vulnerable to corporate job cuts. S&P Global estimates that AI adoption has had a net negative impact on jobs this year and will remain a headwind into 2027. [4]

The narrative may have been optimistic, but revenues slowed in the last quarter and the full-year outlook points to only a modest acceleration in revenue growth and flat operating margins. Even though AI adoption is increasing, it has yet to meaningfully accelerate growth. Meanwhile, Salesforce faces a highly competitive environment against Microsoft, ServiceNow and other rivals, against a tough macroeconomic landscape that could restrain corporate budgets.

Finally, while Salesforce maintains a strong balance sheet, its aggressive capital allocation raises valid questions. In March, the company raised $25 billion via a senior notes bond issuance specifically to fund a massive accelerated share repurchase programme [5]. The move was designed to offset past dilution, defend a depressed stock price and boost near-term EPS.
However, this approach adds hundreds of millions of dollars in annual interest expenses amid higher yields, forcing management to guide cash flow growth down to a modest 4%-5% for the current fiscal year. More importantly, locking up capital in debt-funded buybacks deprives Salesforce of firepower that could otherwise be allocated toward organic AI infrastructure and strategic growth investments.

Salesforce outlook improves but headwinds remain

The stock surged on Thursday following the results, shifting into a much better technical and fundamental position to extend its recovery toward the all-time peak. Optimism around the stock and the business has improved as Agentforce transitions from a conceptual roadmap into verifiable monetisation, helping deflate the SaaSpocalypse narrative.

On the other hand, after such an aggressive post-earnings repricing, the move is technically stretched, leaving the stock vulnerable to pullbacks that could test the EMA200 and the upside momentum. Crucially, structural headwinds linger. Salesforce is moving into a period of solid growth, but not explosive returns. AI disruption risks do not go away and an uncertain macroeconomic environment adds further complexity.

Ultimately, while the company has successfully reframed its Agentic AI story and eased displacement fears, investors must weigh strong product adoption against the realities of a maturing SaaS core and complex capital allocation choices. If Salesforce can consistently convert its multi-billion-dollar agent pipeline into sustained top-line acceleration without exhausting its balance sheet, the stock can run higher. Otherwise, macro friction and AI risk could create renewed pressure.
