Market Jitters Ahead of Key Jobs Report and Fed Decision
The S&P 500 fell 0.3%, marking its third consecutive decline as investors brace for critical economic updates, including today's jobs report, next week's inflation data, and the Federal Reserve's interest-rate decision on 18 September. The Nasdaq Composite rose 0.3% due to strength in the "Magnificent 7" stocks, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.5%. Broadcom's earnings surpassed expectations, but weaker revenue guidance led to a 6% drop in after-hours trading, sparking concerns about the sustainability of the AI boom, with other major chipmakers like Nvidia also falling.
Today's August jobs report is expected to show a 160,000 increase in nonfarm payrolls, with the unemployment rate forecast to dip slightly to 4.2%. However, the whisper number is lower at around 151,000. Meanwhile, jobless claims were lower than expected, and job openings hit a three-year low, though they remain higher than the number of unemployed.
This jobs data will play a key role in shaping the Federal Reserve's policy at its 17-18 September meeting. A weaker report could result in a larger rate cut, possibly as much as half a percentage point, but may raise fears of a recession. On the other hand, stronger data would prompt the Fed to move cautiously. If the report aligns with expectations, it might leave the ongoing debate over a soft landing versus recession unresolved.
