Hot EV Makers Q4 Deliveries

Some of the hottest names in the Electric Vehicle (EV) arena released record delivery figures over the weekend. King Tesla set another record with is Q4 figures and so did Chinese makers Nio and Xpeng.

Tesla

Tesla smashed its previous quarterly record with the delivery of 308,600 vehicles during the last quarter of 2021, compared to 241,300 in Q3 – almost 30% up quarter-over-quarter. [1]

For the whole of 2021, the US company delivered a total of 936,172 units, registering a year-over-year rise of close to 90%.

This an impressive performance given that this past year has been one of supply chain problems and chip shortages. These have created big issues for most automakers, but Tesla seems to have weathered them better that its competitors.

TSLA.us had a very good 2021, rising more than 35% during the last quarter of that year and registering all-time highs in November (1,244.70).

December has been difficult and the stock comes from four negative days, but the delivery figures can lead to a positive open. This would give TSLA.us the chance to push beyond last week's highs (1,119.26).

On the downside, the first major support is provided by the EMA50 at around 1,010.

NIO Inc

Nio delivered 25,034 vehicles in Q4 2021, beating previous quarter figures of 24,439 and setting new quarterly record. [2]

For the Full 2021, it registered a 109.1% year-over-year rise with 91,429 vehicles, while cumulative deliveries of the ES8, ES6 and EC6 as of December 31, 2021 reached 167,070.

The monthly figures were not as impressive though, since it delivered 10,489 vehicles, lower than November's 10,878 print.

On December 18th, the Chinese manufacturer hosted its NIO Day 2021 in Suzhou, where it unveiled a new model – the ET5. [3]

The ET5 is a mid-size smart electric sedan, with a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration of 4.3 seconds and over 1,000 km of range with the largest 150 kWh Ultralong Range Battery.

The new model design is based on the ET7 flagship sedan, which was unveiled early last year and is now expected to be delivered this March.

NIO.us lost nearly 10% in the fourth quarter of a negative year, but the final week of 2021 was upbeat. Helped by the solid delivery report, the stock may be able to push towards the EMA200 (at around 37.70).

However, caution is needed as bias is on the downside and NIO.us remains exposed to December's low (27.45), while Chinese firms that are listed in the US have been facing increasing scrutiny.

Past Performance: Past Performance is not an indicator of future results.

Xpeng Inc

The Chinese EV maker delivered a record of 41,751 cars in the fourth quarter of 2021, a more than 60% rise on a quarterly basis and more than 200% on a yearly basis. [4]

Xpeng also announced that its deliveries rose 263% year-over-year for the Full 2021, with 98,155 units. 7,865 of them were of the P5 smart family sedan, which was launched in September of the prior year.

The firm had unveiled its latest model – the G9 flagship smart SUV - at the 19th Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition on November 19th. [5]

XPEV.us was able to close the year in the green, thanks to last quarter's 40%+ advance. The delivery data from the weekened were good and the stock may have the opportunity to push towards November highs (56.66), but may be early for the ones of 2021 (60.05).

Downward pressure on the other hand, is expected to find a confluence of supports at the broader 43.72-38.52 area.
