Gold Weaker Ahead of CPI Release

The chart below on the left is gold's daily time frame. Price is moving into the area of weakness, between the lower blue and lower red bands. The daily stochastic has dropped below 20 (blue rectangle). As long as the stochastic maintains these levels, the precious metal is likely to be under pressure. In this regard the heikin ashi candle, which helps determine trend, has turned red over the last two days. The chart on the right is the hourly time frame. Here the EMAs and the stochastic have turned down (aqua ellipses). If the EMAs develop angle and separation and the hourly stochastic heads towards 20, the short-term price chart is likely to be under pressure. Please note that the CPI and core CPI are due for release at 1:30 pm GMT. The market expects elevated numbers here, which is perceived as support for tighter monetary policy. This implies that holders of gold, as a haven, will be incurring opportunity costs by foregoing future income, and is a major reason for the current pressure on XAUUSD. The danger here is, if the inflation numbers miss, it will likely rattle the dollar bulls, and drive money back into the precious metal.
