What Is a Stockbroker?

A stockbroker (or a Registered Representative) is an individual or firm who buys and sells stocks and other securities for clients.

Stockbrokers are licensed and regulated individuals who buy and sell stocks and other securities in exchange for a fee or commission. Generally, stockbrokers are associated with a brokerage firm and trade securities over the counter or through a stock exchange. Stockbrokers may be further defined by the licenses they hold or types of securities they sell. The education and licensing of a stockbroker may vary by country.

To be licensed in the United States, for example, a stockbroker must pass the Series 7 exam and either the Series 63 or 66 exam.
