Mastercard operates a global electronic payments company connecting merchants, consumers, and financial institutions in more than 210 countries and territories. It operates under the MasterCard, Maestro and Cirrus brands and is headquartered in Purchase, New York.[1]
The company was founded in 1966 by a group of member banks known as the Interbank Card Association, which later became MasterCard International. In 1985 it acquired the Cirrus ATM network and in 1991 launched Maestro, the world's first online debit network. In 2002 it merged with Europay International and converted from a membership association to a private corporation; it went public in 2006.[2]
Mastercard reported net income for full-year 2020 of US$6.4 billion, down 21% from US$8.4 billion in 2019. Net revenue fell 9% to US$15.3 billion from US$16.9 billion, reflecting the drop in volume due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its economical impact. The company's ticker symbol is MA.
