Westpac is the oldest bank (and oldest company of any type) in Australia. It was founded in 1817 as the Bank of New South Wales and changed its name to Westpac Banking Corporation in 1982 following its acquisition of Commercial Bank of Australia.[1] It's also the third-largest Australian bank in terms of assets at A$889.5 billion as of 31 December 2020.[2] Based in Sydney, Westpac offers a wide range of consumer and business banking services in Australia, New Zealand, and globally.[3]
For the six months ended 31 December 2020, Westpac reported a net profit of A$3.4 billion, up 189% from A$1.2 billion in the comparable period of 2019. Net income rose 1% to A$10.7 billion from A$10.6 billion.[4] The company's ticker symbol is WBC.
