Founded in Queensland in 1920, Qantas—it originally stood for Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services—is the world's second-oldest airline still in operation after KLM, which began service the year before.[1]
It is Australia's largest international airline and domestic carrier by capacity and "widely regarded as the world's leading long-distance airline and one of the strongest brands in Australia," according to the company.[2] In addition to its flagship airline, the company launched Jetstar in 2014, a low-cost carrier. It has since grown to five Jetstar-branded airlines operating across the Asia Pacific, plus joint ventures in Singapore and Japan.[2]
For the six months ending 31 December 2020, Qantas Group reported a statutory after-tax loss of A$1.08 billion, versus a profit of A$445 million in the comparable year earlier period. Revenue dropped 75% to $A2.3 billion from A$9.5 billion, largely the result of the COVID-19 pandemic-driven drop in passenger volume.[3] The company's ticker symbol is QAN.
